SUMMARY:Rangatahi Forum
DESCRIPTION:Like many other Marae\, Tuahiwi has over time witnessed the decline of young people engaging in its activities whether at runanga level\, participating in events happening at the marae or food gathering with whanau. Rangatahi are generally not interested in attending meetings nor the politics – it holds no appeal in their modern social media\, driven world. Increasingly the question is being asked: ‘how do we encourage our young ones to be involved?’ Further many of the cultural practices associated with the marae are of little relevance for our rangatahi unless their whanau are actively engaged.\n\nThe monthly Runanga meetings are about the business and politics of the local runanga and Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu. They are generally attended by small numbers of older members with a keen interest in what is going on. Apart from tangi and other formal occasions there are very few opportunities for engagement. \n\nThe Tuahiwi Rangatahi Forum will provide an opportunity to bring our youth together at the marae to learn\, dream\, aspire and ignite their passions. These rangatahi are the potential leaders of the future and this is an opportunity to give them a voice that will ensure their positive engagement in marae activities.\n\nThe Tuahiwi Rangatahi Forum is a pilot that can potentially be rolled out to the other 17 Ngai Tahu Runanga with a long-term view towards the establishment of a Ngai Tahu Rangatahi Council.\n\nCONCEPT\n\nTo hold a weeklong rangatahi forum based at Tuahiwi Marae during the October school holidays (Sunday 28 Sept – Thursday 2nd October) for 14 – 20 year olds who whakapapa to Tuahiwi with leadership potential and a genuine interest in being involved. \n\nThis inaugural forum will focus on whakapapa and identity – a sense of place\, identity and belonging. Over the course of the week participants will be inspired by role models\, learn history and whakapapa\, share their dreams and aspirations and explore their individual and collective visions for the future and what it means for them to be Ngai Tahu.\n\nAt the end of this introductory week the group will be asked to nominate one of their members to become the rangatahi voice who will report to the monthly runanga meeting and who will represent them on Youth Voice Canterbury\n\nPost forum\, communication channels (Facebook\, Twitter\, Blog) will be established as a vehicle for the group to stay connected and share their thoughts and views with the wider Tuahiwi community.\n\nBased on the success of this initial forum\, the group will be brought back together on a regular basis to continue their growth and encourage their ongoing development. \n\nMentoring will be provided for the group on an ongoing basis to encourage and promote their development.\n\nWe will also look to develop a regular programme of activities for tamariki and rangatahi in the community with the guidance of this group. \n\nTarget number of participants: 15 - 20\n
